Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026: Sales, Games, and a Price Hike

The Nintendo Switch 2 arrived on June 5, 2025, and just over a year later it has already rewritten Nintendo's record books. As of the end of March 2026, Nintendo had shipped roughly 19.86 million units, and worldwide sell-through has since pushed past the 20 million mark. That makes the Switch 2 the company's fastest-selling console to date, and in the United States the market-research firm Circana ranked it the second fastest-selling video game system in the country's history.

To put that in context, Circana reported that US Switch 2 sales ran about 45% ahead of where the original Switch stood at the same point, and roughly 29% ahead of the PlayStation 5. During one quarter the newcomer even outsold Sony's console by around a million units. Not a bad opening act for a machine many observers thought was priced too aggressively out of the gate.

The Price Conversation Is Not Over

Speaking of price: the Switch 2 launched in the US at $449.99, a full 50% higher than the original Switch's debut price, and that number drew plenty of criticism. In May 2026 the picture got pricier still. Citing an ongoing global memory shortage and other cost pressures, Nintendo announced a hardware price increase, with the US console set to start at $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Europe and Japan face similar bumps. If you have been waiting to buy, the window to grab the lower MSRP is closing.

Supply has been the other running headache. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa publicly apologized for shortages, which have been driven in large part by scarce semiconductors and by AI-fueled demand for memory components. Stock has loosened as 2026 has progressed, with retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and GameStop seeing restocks, but "limited quantities" warnings still tend to mean units vanish in hours rather than days.

What You Actually Play On It

Hardware is only half the story. Mario Kart World was the signature launch title, expanding the kart-racing formula with an ambitious open-world mode that lets you roam between courses. It was followed by Donkey Kong Bananza, a terrain-destroying 3D platformer in which DK can smash through walls and floors to carve new paths, with a young Pauline riding along and a clever split Joy-Con co-op mode.

Momentum has kept building. Nintendo is running a "Choose Your Game" bundle that lets buyers pick Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza or Pokemon Pokopia at no extra cost over the standard console price. July 2026 alone brings a dense slate, including Digimon Story: Time Stranger, Moss: The Forgotten Relic, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Splatoon Raiders and a Switch 2 edition of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. A June Nintendo Direct also closed with the reveal of a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, expected later in the year.

Under the Hood

The Switch 2 is a meaningful generational leap. It pairs an octa-core ARM Cortex-A78C CPU with a custom Nvidia Ampere GPU, 12 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a much roomier 256 GB of internal storage, expandable via faster microSD Express cards. The built-in LCD screen runs up to 1080p at 120 Hz in handheld mode, while docking unlocks up to 4K at 60 Hz on a compatible TV, with HDR either way. Crucially, Nvidia's DLSS upscaling and hardware ray tracing are along for the ride, helping the portable punch above its raw specs.

Here are a few things that still surprise people about the machine:

• Magnetic Joy-Con 2: The controllers snap on with strong magnets instead of a rail, and a rear release button pops them free.
• Mouse mode: Each Joy-Con 2 has a sensor that turns any flat surface into a mouse pad, used to great effect for precise aiming in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.
• The C button and GameChat: A dedicated button launches a Discord-style voice and video party system for up to four friends, who can even share screens while playing different games.
• Deep backward compatibility: The vast majority of the 15,000-plus original Switch library runs on the new hardware, in both physical and digital form.
• Battery reality check: The 5,220 mAh cell delivers a wide roughly 2 to 6.5 hour range depending on the game, so demanding titles drain it fast.

One year in, the Switch 2 looks like a rare launch success that has managed to sell out repeatedly while quietly assembling a strong library. Nintendo is forecasting a sales slowdown in its next fiscal year, which is natural after a record-breaking debut. For now, the harder question for most players is not whether the console is worth it, but whether they can find one at the price they want before the next increase lands.
